Due to the plenty of uses of baking soda, you might want to store a large amount of it in a long term. Here are some tips to store baking soda properly to keep it always fresh.
Use a resealable plastic bag
When you buy baking soda, it usually comes with a box. The box is specifically designed for baking soda, so you can just keep the baking soda in its box after opening it. However, the box is not sealable. Therefore, it is highly suggested to put the box in a resealable plastic bag. You can buy a zippered plastic bag online or in nearby stores. They are available in various sizes. Seal the plastic bag very tightly by pushing all of the air out of the bag. It helps the powder fresh for a long period of time.
Keep it in a dry place
After you place the box inside a tight-sealed plastic bag or container, keep it in a dry place. The best place to store baking soda is in a cupboard but make sure the cupboard is not humid. Choose a storage place that stays cool and dry. In order to keep it fresh, make sure the temperature where it is kept remains constant. It means choose a cupboard that’s away from coffee pot, fridge, microwave, or stove.
It is also important to keep it away from strong odors and spices because baking soda can absorb odors even though they are placed in an airtight plastic bag. Last, whenever you want to use the baking soda, avoid using wet or contaminated utensils to remove it as they may reduce the life of the baking soda. Instead, use only a dry and clean measuring spoon.
Check for efficacy before you use it
Although baking soda generally do not have expired date, it can lost its efficacy over time. With proper storage, it still works well for six months. After six months, it will start losing its potency and power. Before you use it, don’t forget to check for its efficacy especially if you want to use it for foods or health.
In order to check whether baking soda is still after or not you can use white or apple cider vinegar. Add ¼ teaspoon of vinegar into ½ cup of hot water. After that, add ¼ teaspoon of baking soda into the water. Immediate bubbling will immediately appear. This fizzing reaction is a sign that the chemical is still active which means the baking soda is still good. If there is no such fizzing reaction, the baking should be replaced with the new one.
